New York Round Up

All in all, we really enjoyed our weekend in New York City.

Everybody dance now!
We took a ferry to pass by the Statue of Liberty, which is still closed due to the hurricane.

But we could see it from a distance.

Along with Ellis Island.

On our way back, we saw something a bit frightening.  This ferry, much like ours, was listing wildly to one side.  I was happy it didn't tip over!  A point if you could guess what would cause such a big boat to tip like this.

Approaching the spectacular skyline of New York.

Within the concrete jungle.

Bram, thinking about something deep, I'm sure.

We also walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, afterwards eating pizza in one of the many famous Brooklyn pizzarias directly under the bridge.

The view of Manhattan from Brooklyn.

Who better to spend the weekend with?  He's a special guy for sure.

  1. If a ferry is not fully loaded it can tend to list to one side as they load the ferries symmetrically one side first then the other. To prevent a ferry from listing when it is not full it should be loaded asymmetrically a car here a car there... (of course that would mean they would have to know whether they will be full--or not full before they start the loading.) Also, if the cars on one side of the ferry have full tanks of gas and the cars on the other side do not have full tanks that can happen as well. And to carry that even further. If there is more to see on what side of the ferry and everyone is on that side-- well there you have it... a listing boat. But chances are the loading of the ferry is the most likely reason it lists to one side.... :)

  2. Ginny's guess: Captain Jack Sparrow yells for everyone to run to one side of the ferry, then back to the other side. This picture was clearly taken just a few seconds before they entered Davy Jones' Locker.

    Sjaak's guess: planetary convergence.

  3. Ginny - you are right. Shortly after the ferry listed, a Kraken ate the boat.

    Just kidding.

Mom - you are on the right track. Here are some hints:
    1. I know the reason the boat is listing (whereas I do not know how much each gas tank in each car is filled - that being said, there are no cars on this ferry).
    2. We could move around on the boat - there was no assigned seating.
    3. If I zoomed out in the picture, it would be more obvious why the boat is listing.

    Good luck! ;-)

  4. Hmmmm...so maybe they were making a quick turn to avoid another boat/ferry/ship? Ginny

Sjaak thinks maybe everyone in the ferry was crowded on one side looking out at some famous landmark or attraction.

  5. Sjaak - you are getting so close. Think - why were we on this boat in the first place?

  6. They were on that side of the boat as they were all looking at the Statue of Liberty as that would be the closest they could get to it since it was closed because of Hurricane Sandy...

  7. Yes! Everyone in the boat on one side to snap their picture of the Statute of Liberty. That's how I know our boat did the exact same thing...
