Christmas markets in France are quite fun. The one in Grenoble is particularly large. It is set up (oddly enough, the day after Thanksgiving) and runs all the way until Christmas eve. The booths are open all day, and sell everything from handmade cookies to tartiflette (melted cheese and potatoes) to all sorts of crafts.
One of the highlights is getting "marron chaud" - or roasted chesnuts. Being from the western US, I've never had them before. They were quite good.
The other treat is hot spiced wine. It really helps warm you up!
At night, the city streets are decorated with lights.
